Design Trends: Buyer Beware

Deciding how to design your home can be challenging – not only do you need to decide upon a style, you also need to use that style to create a design scheme that looks cohesive and works well together.

To create a beautiful home that will look fantastic for many years to come it is important to avoid some common pitfalls. One of the biggest mistakes I see people often make is falling in love with a current design trend and going overboard with it throughout the whole home.

When it comes to design trends, it’s recommended that you keep them to smaller, accent pieces around your home instead of using them for larger items and rooms.

Many people want their homes to look “Insta-worthy” which may mean they choose to design their homes around the latest design trends for any given year.

However, these trends are precisely that – trends. They change every few years or even year to year. And when that ‘design do’ you’ve chosen for your home becomes a ‘design don’t,’ you’ll find it feeling outdated very quickly. Even worse, you may choose to design around a specific trend, only to find out that you’ve fallen out of love with it in a few months, or the reality looks nothing like your expectations.

If you find that you’ve fallen in love with a design trend, it’s still possible to bring it into your home without making it the focal design concept. You can do this by using the trend in smaller, accent pieces around your home, like throw pillows, décor items, or smaller furniture pieces.

While design trends are a fun way to decorate your home, they can often get tired and dated quickly. By making sure you only your favorite trends in small places, you can keep your interior design fresh and classic for a long time to come.
